A-Z on Body Arts: Tools, Materials, Techniques, Health Hazards and Prevention

Body art is an ancient but populous form of body enhancement. There are various reasons why people engage in body art such as coiffure, body painting, body markings and the like. Some are done for purely aesthetic or decorative purposes while others are for medicinal, spiritual, entertainment, identification or symbolic reasons.

A wide of tools can be used for body enhancement. These include dabbing tools, painting tools, incising tools, smearing tools, tattooing tools, etc. Materials used for body arts include tattooing dyes, special cleaning agents etc. Drawing and writing inks, such as Indian ink, Pelican ink and printer inks are popularly used for amateur tattoos. Other colourants that can be used include pigments and dyes. Other materials used include plant extracts, soot, carbon and ochre. Henna, which is a natural plant, is also used for the production of temporary tattoos.

There are several causes of health hazards in body arts. Majority of them are as a result of contamination of the instruments used. Examples of these are the skin penetrating tools such as lances, electrolysis needles and extractors. When these instruments are not effectively cleaned and sterilized before use on another person, or when single-use instruments are not discarded immediately after use.

There are also allergic and toxic reactions which are due to impurities from the production process of the pigments and dyes used for tattooing. Tattoo inks can contain aromatic amines with carcinogenic potential (can cause cancer). Some tattoo products have been seen to cause mild forms of skin cancer. Tattoo dyes especially red, green, yellow and blue dyes can cause allergic skin reactions, such as an itchy rash at the tattooed area. This can occur even years after you get the tattoo.

Moreover, skin problems such as bumps called granulomas form around tattoo ink. Tattooing also can lead to keloids or raised areas caused by an overgrowth of scar tissue. It may cause blood borne diseases. For instance, if the equipment used to create the tattoo is contaminated with infected blood, the person can contract various blood borne diseases including tetanus, hepatitis B, hepatitis C or even HIV/AIDS.

These health-related cases can be prevented by taking some practical steps. For instance, the tools and equipment used for the production of body arts must be sterilized. Washing hands is the single most important factor in preventing infection.

Also, chemicals used in body arts must be properly labeled so that there will not be any substitutions. The chemicals must be properly cared for. They must be kept in well secured containers etc. The instructions on how to use and care for them must be meticulously followed.

Moreover, all working surfaces used, for example, procedure couches/chairs, benches and tables, should be washed with warm water and detergent, rinsed and dried using a clean lint-free single-use cloth. Additionally, at the end of each working day, wash all visibly soiled surfaces with warm water and detergent. Rinse and dry the cleaned surfaces using a clean lint-free single-use cloth.

There are a lot of techniques that can be employed in body arts. The commonest technique is painting. It involves the application of the paint, dye or pigment by the use of brush. After drawing the sketch or layout of the design on the skin surface, brush is used to apply the paint on the body surface. Printing, whereby designs are sometimes printed on the body surface is also used. Sometimes papers with permissible ink are transferred onto the body surface. Laser printers are also used to transfer computerized designs onto the surfaces of skin. Paint can be dabbed on the body surface using sponge or foam to transfer designs onto skin surfaces. Sometimes, the ink or paint can be spread over the surface of the skin to create the design or impression on the surface of the skin.

Other techniques include incision, thus, cutting into the surface of the skin to create a design. This is used in scarification and some forms of tattooing. The interlocking of the hair strands to form decorative forms referred to as braiding or plaiting falls under body arts.

Body art is gaining much fame today in the art industry. Artists must be weary of the health hazards in the use of tools, materials and instruments. They must endeavor to keep healthy practices while engaging in this interesting form of artistic expression.

Concrete Deterioration: Types and Causes

Concrete is used worldwide for it is an exceptionally durable construction material. However, severe exposure conditions, material limitations, and construction practices lead to concrete deterioration which later causes structural deficiencies. A variety of factors can be associated with concrete deterioration. Corrosion of steel reinforcement is considered to be the leading factor in this regard. In normal atmospheric conditions, steel and most of the others metals are thermodynamically unstable and tends to revert back to its original state.

Causes of concrete deterioration:

Chloride ions

When reinforced concrete is exposed to chloride ions, it leads to premature corrosion of steel reinforcement. Chloride ions penetrate into concrete and cause steel corrosion only when moisture and oxygen are available to facilitate the reaction. In the presence of moisture and oxygen, steel becomes more vulnerable to corrosion when chloride content exceeds a certain limit.

Water expansion

Water expands about 9% when freezes. When water freezes inside concrete, it produces pressure in pores and capillaries, resulting in cracking, crumbling, and scaling of concrete. Concrete with minimum permeability resists the water penetration and perform better when exposed to perpetual freeze-thaw cycles.


Concrete is usually effective against environmental conditions, water, and chemicals. However, under some severe chemical conditions, it deteriorates rapidly. It can only withstand occasional acid attacks. Surface protective treatments can prevent acid attacks and help concrete structures achieve better resistance against chemicals.


Concrete usually perform well in heat and fire. However, when heat exceeds a certain point, it damages the strength of concrete. Exceptionally high temperature or fire decreases the stiffness and strength of a structure. Flexural strength, compressive strength, and modulus of elasticity are effected under highly elevated temperature.

Types of concrete deterioration:

One of the properties of concrete is that it contracts when cooled and expands when heated. Water-cement ratios, cement content, age, humidity are some of the factors that determine the contraction or expansion of concrete. Proper concrete detailing and design can prevent cracking. Formed surface, earthquake damage, and loss of support are some of the types of deterioration.

Without an effective reinforcement material, it is hard to build sustainable concrete buildings. Plenty of research has already been made to develop a reinforcement material that can minimize the limitations of concrete and make it effective against chemicals, water, salt, and other environmental conditions. Deterioration of buildings has serious economic and environmental impact. Sustainability and long service life of a project can be ensured by reinforcing concrete with material that can resist corrosive agents as well as natural calamities.

Although you might not need one for taking apart a desk or putting in closet doors, you will most likely need a tri wing screwdriver for taking apart electronics. The Difference Between Lifting Straps And Lifting Slings

If you can’t tell a lifting strap from a lifting sling, this is the article for you. Both are used in moving items around but they have widely varied applications.

Some people use the term lifting strap and lifting sling interchangeably. However, they are actually two different tools with two different applications.

A lifting strap is also referred to as a moving strap. This type of moving aid can be used to help people – usually a team of two people – lift heavy objects. These straps can be a lifesaver in moving in and out of a residential home especially if you are moving yourself. Professional movers also use them instead of a traditional wheeled dolly because there are certain places you don’t want to wheel a dolly around a home. For example, you may not want to wheel a dolly over white carpet or fragile tile floors. There also may be pieces of furniture or appliances which don’t lend themselves to being moved with a dolly. A moving strap is usually secured around both persons shoulders and/or waists in order to provide stability and help you handle the heavy object. A lifting sling is generally used in an industrial or marine setting to lift or hoist very heavy equipment such as boats, trucks and construction equipment. Chain type are the strongest option. All types are graded by the manufacturer for a variety of load factors and you need to be careful to purchase the correct hoist for your load. The slings are usually connected to the crane or whatever is being used for the pull with a shackle or other type of industrial strength connector.

No Generator Output? Flashing The Field To Fix Or Troubleshoot

As a former employee and current owner of an industrial generator rental company and electrician with 15 years of generator troubleshooting experience, I’ve had many situations where the engine powering the genset is running great, but the generator isn’t producing any electricity. There are plenty of articles on the internet explaining how to flash the field in order to re-magnetize the generator, but this one will go a step further and also explain how artificially exciting a generator can aid in narrowing down the cause of the failure.


Just because you don’t see any volts on your panel meter doesn’t mean that you won’t be electrocuted. Remember, the panel meter can be flawed, check it with a hand held multimeter. Secondly, flashing a field results in a build up of magnetism within the generator. Over time of inactivity, the magnetism may dissipate entirely and flashing the field “refills” the missing magnetism. It is, however, entirely possible that the reason for the generator losing output isn’t related to a lack of residual magnetism in the generator. If this is the case, then there will be a voltage present that is lower than the rated output voltage, but definitely enough to cause a painful electrocution.


Use a multimeter to check if there is any voltage present at all. If there is, then it’s a good indication that the problem is not within the generator.

Shut the machine off and locate the voltage regulator. You’ll find 2 wires marked F+ and F-. Pay close attention to where each is and remove them. Put your multimeter on “Ohms” and measure the resistance across them and write down the result. Unfortunately each manufacturer has different values as normal, but 0 and infinite ohms are two bad news signs that you’ll require the services of a generator rewind shop. If you have ohms, leave the wires off and keep reading.


Ideally you’ll have a variable DC supply available. If not, use a 9V battery, or even a car battery and carefully hook up the [+ to F+] and the [- to F-].

Start the engine, and keep it at low idle if possible. You should instantly notice a voltage is present. As you increase engine RPM, you’ll notice the voltage will increase. Do not go beyond rated voltage. Keep the machine running for 30 seconds and shut off the engine.

Re-connect the F+ and F- to their original location. Now start the engine and see if you have volts.


By flashing the field and bringing the machine up to proper voltage, you’ve effectively ruled out any problems within the generator’s main windings (the most expensive repair).

You should now focus on the AVR (automatic voltage regulator), a fuse in line with the AVR, or a wire or switch that supplies the AVR. Do “tug testing” of wires, visually inspect everything that you can. If nothing wrong is found, contact the manufacturer of the generator and find out what the ohms of the field should be and compare it to what you found earlier.

Graphite and Its Effects on the Human Body and Tool Room Equipment

The health and welfare of toolmakers that use graphite to make electrodes for use the EDM machining of molds should be a high priority for management. In addition to the health issues for the workers, the very expensive machinery, such as the EDM machines and milling machines, must be protected from the damaging effects of graphite dust. EDM and injection molding are inseparably linked in the manufacturing process of plastic products.

Anyone who has worked with graphite in the manufacturing of EDM electrodes is keenly aware of the need for proper dust removal during the machining process. Many ill-equipped shops have very little equipment to handle the dust generated during milling and grinding operations.


The MSDS (material safety data sheet) for the synthetic graphite used in EDM show that there are no carcinogenic properties associated with graphite. It is a chemically inert material and contains no volatile components. It is also used for medical purposes, such as implants and heart valves in the human body.

This is not to say that graphite is totally harmless though. It can be very irritating to the skin, eyes, and nasal passages. It can cause stinging, redness and watering of the eyes, and itching of the skin. This can be a very annoying experience when a toolmaker is expected to produce a close-tolerance electrode with a fine finish.

Controlling the Dust

The simple but very ineffective solution is to wear particle masks. Experience shows that this stop-gap measure is a failure. The mask soon is clogged with the fine dust and the operator is left breathing a disgusting blend of bad-breath and graphite dust!

Portable vacuums are the next best solution, but this also has many drawbacks. Often the filter in the portable shop vacuum is not fine enough to trap the microscopic sized particles, and they are simply blown back into the air. Also, because the vacuum hose is often cumbersome to manipulate, operators fail to properly align the hose to capture the most dust.

Many shops use a centralized vacuum system designed for the removal of fine dust particles, such as graphite. It is important to have enough air velocity in the vacuum system to be effective. It is recommended to have an air velocity of 500 ft. per minute and the air in the lines should travel at a rate of 2,000 ft. per minute in order to prevent the dust from settling inside the duct work.

With a centralized system it is much easier to efficiently manage the dust from the various machine tools because the system is more efficient and the hoses can be strategically placed. Special wheel guards are available for surface grinders that act as a turbo to remove the dust into the vacuum system.

Newer milling machines which are more or less dedicated to electrode machining are equipped with extremely effective dust removal systems. The sealed chamber around the work area enables the vacuum to capture a high percentage of the dust. This development has dramatically reduced the amount of graphite dust in the shop environment.

An additional method of dust removal is the use of a curtain of coolant surrounding the milling cutter. This prevents the dust from ever escaping and is very efficient. This feature is available on some milling machines as well as an accessory that is easily installed.

A Clean Shop Environment

Graphite dust is highly conductive and has been responsible for the damage of many expensive tools and machines. Glass scales can give false measurements due to the settling of dust. Electronic equipment can be short-circuited by the dust as well. The grimy nature of graphite makes it especially annoying if it accumulates on work-benches and desks.

It is in the best interest of everyone to make every effort of maintain a clean and pleasant atmosphere in a moldmaking or EDM shop. The toolmakers will be happier, the work will be better and the machinery will perform as it should. It is also very impressive to visitors to see a clean, dust-free shop.

Angular contact

The self-aligning ball bearings are designed to run at high speeds while still being able to generate very low friction. What Kind of Netball Equipment Do You Need?

When you start playing a sport like netball you will have to take the time to learn the rules of the game and also how to play. You will take time to study the moves, positions, and list of things you are not allowed to do. You should also think about getting some netball equipment so that you can practice at home or if you are introducing the sport at your school.

Netball is a sport that is similar to basketball and is usually played by women only, although men’s netball is a growing sport.

The differences between netball and basketball are the fact that instead of running with the ball and dribbling, in netball you are not allowed to move when you have the ball. If you are passed the netball you have to stop, keeping the landing foot on the ground at all times whilst you can lift the other foot to pivot in another direction before passing the ball on to another player. Each player is only allowed within certain sections of the court and the netball ring is much higher and smaller than that of a basketball ring and it doesn’t have the backboard to assist players in scoring a goal.

The netball equipment that you need will consist of a regulation size net without a backboard and a netball. A regulation netball post can be free standing so that it can be wheeled away when not in use or it can be socketed, so that it screws into an underground socket. These are available for use on both indoor and outdoor netball courts. The regulation height of the ring is ten feet, but posts will also usually have two lower settings for infant and junior netball. If you don’t have room for a regulation size post in the garden there are garden style sets available with posts which separate into sections and fit into a polythene base, like that used for sun shades or alternatively you can purchase wall mounted netball rings to fix on an existing wall. These are useful for younger players as the wall will act as a backboard to assist them in scoring until their skill and confidence increases.

The netball is not as hard and heavy as a basket ball and is meant to encourage a fast game, even though you are not allowed to run with the ball. Netballs are available for either indoor use, outdoor use or a combination of both. Netballs come in two sizes size 4 is for juniors and size 5 is for senior netball. If buying a netball for home use then a training ball will be sufficient, if buying for a school or club then you will need several training balls and then one or two match quality netballs for use in competitive games.

The netball team is made up of seven players and each player has a position. This is indicated using a netball bib or Velcro patch with the positional letters printed on it. Each position has certain parts of the court which they are allowed to operate within and the rest of the court is out of bounds. Most clubs and schools will have at least two sets of bibs so that they can practice with two teams and also so that they can swap sets if the opponents’ bibs are the same or similar colour when playing away. It is important for both teams to have a set of bibs because the positions and where the players can go are a vital part of the game so the umpire will need to know who is who on the court to rule effectively. It isn’t possible to get away with one team being bibs and one team being non-bibs as it might be in football, they are a vital piece of netball equipment. Bibs are sold in sets of seven for the whole team and some netball dresses come with the positional patches included. Reversible bibs are also available so that teams only need carry one set with them when playing away from home and they can swap the colour they wear if necessary.

Netball uses very specific rules and you have to play within a strict pattern and layout otherwise you get penalised. To practice these positions you will make use of netball training equipment like cones where you will have to stop and start running, weave in and out of them, and practice throwing and catching techniques.

Another important piece of netball equipment is a good pair of netball shoes. These are designed specifically for the strains of netball focusing on the pivot points and on cushioning and grip. Some are designed for outdoor netball, some for indoor and some for both types of game.

The last thing that you will need is netball clothing. For training you will just need tracksuits and possibly baselayers to keep you comfortable and improve your performance. When playing in matches most schools and teams will have a netball kit. This is usually made up of a skirt and a blouse with lycra pants underneath but now skorts and dresses are becoming more popular. A skort is a skirt with a built in pair of undershorts and the netball dresses are all in one top and skirt combined usually with Velcro style fixings to add positional patch bibs to.

These are the only items of netball equipment you will need. The players are not required to wear any head gear or guards, as it is not a full contact sport. In fact contact is prohibited and you can get fouled for pushing, leaning into or obstructing your mark or another opponent unless it was an accidental collision which is very unlikely.

Keep these tips in mind as you consider whether or not owning your own snowboard equipment would be worth it…

1. For first-timers

If you’ve never been snowboarding before, you should always rent–in fact, you may want to rent the first few times you head to the hill.

Rental boards are tailor-made to help a new rider through the learning process. Plus, with a rental board you don’t have to worry about damage when you ride off of the trail and into the dirt.

Even if you are planning a longer vacation and the price of renting seems greater than buying, you are better off sticking with the rental equipment. You might find that after the first few full days of snowboarding, you need a few days off to recuperate; you won’t be needing a board the entire vacation after all.

2. Don’t rent, demo

If you can shape turns down a green slope, it might be time to start thinking about customized gear as you start to further advance your skills.
